| Trio Vintners is a joint venture between Tim Boushey, Denise Slattery and Steve Michener, all recent graduates of the Institute of Enology and Viticulture in Walla Walla. The winery is located in the airport region. Zinfandel is a still a pretty rare beast is Washington state. The grapes for this bottling came from the Wahluke Slope AVA. I found this wine to be a very interesting effort but ultimately a little over extracted, and the whopping 16.2% alcohol shows. Still, there is promise there, and it makes me interested to try some other zins from the state. If you know of some others, leave a comment and let me know. |

ReplyDeleteZin never seems to work for my palate (too much alcohol, not enough acid), so I haven't tasted much. A quick CellarTracker search shows that the most frequently owned Washington zin by far is Sineann. But it turns out their vineyards are actually in Oregon, just over the border, so that doesn't really count.
Next on the list are Maryhill and Forgeron; it's unclear to me where they're sourcing their grapes.
Sean-- I'd agree with you that the Zin from 06 is a little much. It is not my favorite wine that we make. However, I am excited about the 2007 Zin from the same vineyard that we are getting ready to bottle. We brought it in at a much lower brix but still very ripe. The alcohol should be under 15% and the fruit is more restrained but with lots of flavors. We'll probably release in the spring so check it out.
