134 wines reviewed in the August issue of Wine Enthusiast. Here are some of the standouts.

In just a few short years, Passing Time has established itself as one of the top producers of Cabernet Sauvignon in Washington. The 2016 releases are at the top of their class, beautiful out of the gate but also offering profound aging potential (Passing Time 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills $8094 pointsCellar SelectionPassing Time 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain $8093 pointsCellar SelectionPassing Time 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley $8092 pointsCellar SelectionPassing Time 2016 Columbia Valley $5592 pointsCellar Selection).

Executive winemaker Chris Upchurch has made his mark in Washington wine over the decades at DeLille Cellars. However, his personal, vineyard-specific project, Upchurch Vineyard, also demands attention. The 2016 wines is one of the wines of the vintage (Upchurch 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain $75 94 pointsCellar Selection).

I wrote recently on my Facebook page about the 2016 Dowsett Family Riesling. The 2017 vintage of this wine, reviewed here, is another extremely strong offering from this vineyard (Dowsett Family 2017 Aunt Diane’s Vineyard Riesling Columbia Gorge $16 90 points). For those looking for a dry style, high acid, well-priced Riesling, look no further.

I also mentioned on Facebook this week Quintessence Vineyard, which has produced some extremely high quality wines since the first vines went into the ground in 2010. If you want a primer on what Quintessence is all about, check out the Mark Ryan 2016 Water Witch Red Mountain ($5892 points). Mark Ryan Winery has made a strong investment in this vineyard, and tasting the Water Witch it’s obvious why. Quintessence has all the makings to become one of the top Cabernet Sauvignon sites in Washington.

We don’t see a whole lot of Cabernet Sauvignon coming out of the Rocks District. Due to arcane labeling laws, we see even fewer using the actual Rocks District designation. Currently, only wineries located in Oregon are able to use this appellation designation, despite it being a sub-appellation of the Walla Walla Valley where over a hundred Washington wineries are located (more technically, only wines that are “fully finished” in Oregon can use the Rocks District on the label). Oregon-based Laelaps gives a great look at the variety from this area (Laelaps 2016 The Rocks Cabernet Sauvignon The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater $50 90 pointsEditor’s Choice).

On the value side, Milbrandt Vineyards delivers a high quality Merlot from the 2017 vintage (Milbrandt 2017 Merlot Columbia Valley $17 91 pointsEditor’s Choice). The Nine Hats 2016 Red Blend Columbia Valley ($2091 pointsEditor’s Choice) is an extremely high quality wine to find at this price level.

Enjoy!

Harvest begins in Washington

The first grapes of 2019 are in the door in eastern Washington!

Sparkling wine producer Treveri Cellars picked three varieties from its estate vineyard in Yakima Valley: Chardonnay (18.1 Brix), Pinot Meunier (17.5), and Pinot Blanc (17.9). Winemaker Christian Grieb says picking will continue tomorrow, with 30 tons of Chardonnay at Hilltop Vineyard. Next Monday, August 26th, they will pick Pinot Noir at Marchant Vineyard.

Grieb reports that the Hilltop pick will be four to five days behind 2018, Marchant about six days. This is the first year that the winery has picked fruit from its estate vineyard.

Let Harvest 2019 begin!
