Woodinville-based EFESTE continues to produce some flat out delicious Rhône-style wines (Efeste 2014 Ceidleigh Syrah Red Mountain $3993 pointsEfeste 2014 Emmy Stone Tree Vineyard Mourvèdre Wahluke Slope $49, 93 points).

Ferguson in particular is proving itself to be a special site.

If you want to check out what you get from aging a bottle of wine, look no further than Lawrelin Wine. Though these wines have life in front of them, they are in a sweet spot right now and are more than reasonably priced considering their age (Lawrelin 2004 Syrah Columbia Valley $4292 pointsLawrelin 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $4891 points).

Winemaker Aryn Morell (MatthewsAlleromb) has launched a new, Chardonnay focused project called Morell-Peña, with the wines named after his three daughters. Rasa Vineyards continues to produce some fascinating wines, none more so that the Rasa 2013 Veritas Sequitur SJR Vineyard Syrah Walla Walla Valley ($9594 points). This wine was aged for 32 months in 85% new French oak – considerably longer and with a higher percentage of new oak than the norm. Interestingly, it’s the fruit that still wins the day on this Rocks District wine. Meanwhile the Rasa 2015 Tilting at Windmills XL Vineyard Walla Walla Valley ($7592 points) is a unique blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon well worth checking out.

Reynvaan Family Vineyards shows that its estate site in the foothills of the Blue Mountains can shine just as brightly as its wines from the Rocks (Reynvaan Family Vineyards 2014 Foothills Reserve Syrah Walla Walla Valley $7094 pointsReynvaan Family Vineyards 2014 Estate In the Rocks Syrah Walla Walla Valley $7093 points).

Syrah is a relative rarity in the Columbia Gorge, but Syncline Winery shows that in the right vintage and in the right hands, it can succeed (Syncline 2014 Estate Vineyard Syrah Columbia Gorge $6092 points). Also not to be missed is the winery’s one-of-a-kind Syncline 2015 Scintillation Brut Sparkling Wine Underwood Mountain Vineyard Grüner Veltliner Columbia Gorge ($4090 points).

Keep an eye on the Walla Walla-based The Walls Vineyards. Their The Walls 2014 Stanley Groovy Red Blend Red Mountain ($3890 points) is a unique blend of Souzão, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Cão, varieties on the rise in the state. They also produce a thoroughly charming Columbia Gorge rosé (The Walls 2016 Cruel Summer Rosé Columbia Gorge $2290 points).

Meanwhile, W.T. Vintners is making some of the most thrilling wines in Washington right now, showing equal dexterity with reds and whites. I can’t recommend highly enough their W.T. Vintners 2014 Damavian Les Collines Vineyard Syrah Walla Walla Valley ($4593 points); W.T. Vintners 2014 Gorgeous Destiny Ridge Vineyard Syrah Horse Heaven Hills ($3092 points); W.T. Vintners 2016 Stoneridge Vineyard Chenin Blanc Columbia Valley ($2090 points); and W.T. Vintners 2016 Underwood Mountain Vineyard Grüner Veltliner Columbia Gorge ($2090 points). This is a winery on the rise.

Walla Walla Valley stalwart Woodward Canyon continues to show its mastery of Chardonnay with the Woodward Canyon 2015 Chardonnay Washington ($4491 points). I also highly recommend their Woodward Canyon 2014 Artist Series #23 Cabernet Sauvignon Washington ($5993 points). It needs time in the cellar but it’s a winner.

Looking for some rosés to round out the summer? Look no further than the Buty 2016 Rosé of the Stones Rosé Walla Walla Valley ($2590 points). Rocks District rosés are a rarity making this a bottle to seek out. The Upsidedown 2016 Rescue Rosé Columbia Valley ($1890 points) meanwhile is a rare example of a Washington Nebbiolo rosé.

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2014 Ethos Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $48 89 points
Aromas of ham, coffee, blue and black fruit, vanilla and spice lead to big chewy tannins and a palate full of black and purple-fruit flavors. It’s bold but still brings a sense of refinement, with the tannins quite grainy. The variety seems a bit hard to find and the wood a bit heavy.

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $15 89 points
For Cabernet, the aromas are surprisingly blue and purple fruited, almost smelling more like a Syrah. Putting that aside, it brings a lot of appeal with a real sense of freshness to the fruit flavors. The tannins seem a bit bunched up at present, needing a little more time to stretch out. Still, it provides plenty of enjoyment.

High-toned aromas of pear, lees and apple lead to medium-bodied fruit flavors. It shows no apparent new oak influence, letting the fruit shine through.

Co Dinn 2014 Roskamp VIneyard Block Two Syrah Snipes Mountain $50 90 points
Seeing only neutral French oak, reserved but intriguing aromas of dark raspberry, herb and plum are followed by well-constructed dark-fruit flavors. It’s equal parts intrigue and delivery.

Co Dinn 2014 Painted Hills Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $50 89 points
Cabernet clones 6, 8 and 191 make up the majority of this wine. The aromas show some reduction out of the gate. This is followed by a medium-bodied, acid driven palate, with clove, cherry, wood spice and herb flavors. There’s intrigue but it doesn’t all quite come together. That said, it should fit in well at the dinner table.

Col Solare 2014 Component Collection Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain $85 91 points
Aromas of barrel spice, purple fruit and herb lead to well-balanced fruit and barrel flavors. It’s an unusual interpretation of Cabernet. Still, it should have a long life in front of it, showing a lot of structure.

Col Solare 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain $75 90 points
The aromas bring notes of plum, blue fruit and barrel spice. The palate comes off as considerably darker, with rich fruit flavors supported by firm tannins. There are lots of good things going on if the aromas and flavors sync up, though it doesn’t seem much like Cabernet.
