Below are my Wine Enthusiast reviews for November 2016. Wines are listed alphabetically by winery. Read additional information on how I review wines here. Meanwhile Ardor Cellars offers up a set of extremely impressive 2014 Rhone-style wines (Ardor 2014 Red Heaven Vineyard Syrah Red Mountain $50 93 pointsArdor 2014 Lawrence Vineyard Syrah Columbia Valley $50, 93 pointsArdor 2014 Stoney Vine Vineyard Syrah Walla Walla Valley $50, 93 points).

The B. Leighton 2013 Gratitude  Yakima Valley ($45, 94 points) is a complete stunner.

The Block Wines 2014 Boushey Vineyard Golden Block Grenache Yakima Valley ($35, 92 points) is an exceptional example of this variety at a compelling price.

The new project from Charles Smith – Casa Smith, which is focused on Italian varieties – yields some big time value winners with the Casa Smith 2014 Cervo Northridge Vineyard Barbera Wahluke Slope ($20, 91 pointsCasa Smith 2014 Porcospino Northridge Vineyard Primitivo Wahluke Slope ($20, 91 points); and Casa Smith 2014 Cinghiale Wahluke Slope and Rosebud Vineyards Sangiovese Wahluke Slope ($20, 92 points). Perhaps the most intriguing wine under this label is a Rocks District Barbera that is absolutely sensational (Casa Smith 2012 Jack’s Vineyard Barbera Walla Walla Valley $35, 93 points).

Drew Bledsoe’s Doubleback continues to impress with its latest Cabernet (Doubleback 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley $100, 92 points).

Meanwhile winemaker Chris Dowsett of Dowsett Wines makes the state’s best Gewurztraminer (Dowsett Family 2014 Celilo Vineyard Gewürztraminer Columbia Gorge $2290 points).

The whole lineup at Fielding Hills impresses but no wine more so than its stunning Merlot (Fielding Hills 2013 Estate Riverbend Vineyard Merlot Wahluke Slope $36, 92 points). As I wrote in Seattle Metropolitan’s Top 100 Washington wines issue, I put this wine on a table with 60+ other top quality wines for friends and everyone agreed it was the best bottle on the table.
The Figgins 2013 Estate Red Blend Walla Walla Valley ($85, 93 points) is another age-worthy blend from this project.

Meanwhile L’Ecole No 41 continues to strike gold with its Ferguson Red wine, one of the most exciting wines to come out of this area of the Walla Walla Valley (L'Ecole No. 41 2013 Estate Grown Ferguson Vineyard  Walla Walla Valley $65, 92 points). Also not to be missed is the winery’s L'Ecole No. 41 2015 Old Vines Chenin Blanc Columbia Valley ($15, 90 points). It’s one of the year’s best value wines.

The Maison Bleue 2013 Metis Red Blend Columbia Valley ($20, 90 points) is a big time winner at this price.

Saviah Cellars makes a strong case for Tempranillo in the Walla Walla Valley (Saviah 2013 Tempranillo Walla Walla Valley $38, 92 points). The winery’s 2013 The Stones Speak Syrah Walla Walla Valley ($55, 93 points) is also a knockout.

One for the cellar is the Shoup 2012 Columbia Valley ($95, 92 points).

Sixto impresses with its 2013 Chardonnays, including the Sixto 2013 Moxee Chardonnay Washington ($50, 93 points).

Finally, W.T. Vintners releases an extremely impressive lineup that includes the W.T. Vintners 2014 Boushey Vineyard Mourvèdre Yakima Valley ($49, 91 points); W.T. Vintners 2013 Gorgeous Destiny Ridge Vineyard Syrah Horse Heaven Hills ($30, 91 points); and W.T. Vintners 2013 Damavian Les Collines Vineyard Syrah Walla Walla Valley ($45, 91 points). These are some of the more exciting wines being made in the state right now and are not to be missed.

Andrew Januik 2013 Stone Cairn Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain $40 90 points
Aromas of prune, licorice and dark fruit lead to full cranberry and cherry flavors. It shows a sense of vitality and liveliness.

Andrew Januik 2013 Lady Hawk Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills $50 91 points
A new addition to the lineup, this wine brings aromas of dusty earth, cherry, herb and spice. The cherry flavors show poise and presence, winning on subtlety and balance rather than brawn.

Apex 2013 The Catalyst Red Blend Washington $15 89 points
Aromas of orange peel, flowers, blue fruit and smoked meat are followed by light, spritely fruit flavors. The tannins bring some grip.

Ardor 2014 Red Heaven Vineyard Syrah Red Mountain $50 93 points
This is a new wine from this winery—its first foray onto Red Mountain. The aromas are bright, with fruit-filled notes of cherry, berry and spice in addition to a meat and mineral undertone. The flavors are dense, rich and opulent while still staying in balance. A lick of firm tannins backs it all up.

Ardor 2014 Art Den Hoed Vineyard Syrah Yakima Valley $50 91 points
Initially quite light aromatically, this wine opens with notes of cherry candy and raspberry that reveal themselves over time. The cherry and cranberry flavors are medium bodied, showing good length. It’s a pretty, very understated wine.

Ardor 2014 Quaternarium Syrah Columbia Valley $70 93 points
A new addition to the lineup, this wine is a blend of fruit from Stoney Vine, Lawrence, Red Heaven and Art Den Hoed vineyards. It offers aromas of earthy funk, smoked meat, blueberry, cherry and high-toned spices. The palate is dense and layered, with a mixture of fruit and savory flavors that display poise, focus and length.

Ardor 2013 Art Den Hoed Vineyard Mourvèdre Yakima Valley $35 91 points
Aromas of finely ground black pepper, green herbs, orange peel and cherry are followed by tart, soft, sumptuous cranberry and savory flavors. The finish extends into the distance. It’s all about feel and focus.

Ardor 2013 Lawrence Vineyard Syrah Columbia Valley $40 90 points
This wine starts out brooding, with aromas of vanilla, herbs and brown spices. The cherry flavors are full bodied yet show subtlety, with a captivating mouthfeel and meaty flavors on the finish that increase the interest.

Ardor 2013 Art Den Hoed Vineyard Syrah Yakima Valley $40 91 points
This captures attention with piercing cherry and cranberry aromas and with herb and orange-peel grace notes. The palate is soft, polished and layered, with a mouthfeel that dazzles and the flavors to back it up. The finish lingers.

Ardor 2014 Boushey Vineyard Mourvèdre Yakima Valley $40 92 points
This is a vineyard change for this wine, which now comes from one of the state’s top Syrah sites. Coming in at an absurdly low alcohol level, especially considering the warmth of the vintage, it offers aromas of garrigue, lemon twist and generous amounts of black pepper. The pepper and savory flavors are elegant and polished, with a mouthfeel that demands another sip. It’s all about elegance of expression and feel. Editor's Choice

Ardor 2014 Lawrence Vineyard Syrah Columbia Valley $50 93 points
The aromas are all high toned, with notes of mortared fresh herbs, blueberry pie, citrus, black pepper and whiffs of smoked meat. The palate is dense and rich, tightly focused and flavorful with a meaty streak that runs throughout and a finish that lingers.

Ardor 2014 Stoney Vine Vineyard Syrah Walla Walla Valley $50 93 points
After skipping a vintage, this Rocks District wine is an aromatic tour de force, with notes of grilled asparagus, stems, black and green olives, crushed flowers and mineral, revealing more on each swirl. The palate brings abundant savory flavors that are simultaneously intense and reserved, with a sense of balance that is captivating and a finish that kicks it up a notch.

Array 2013 Nina’s Reserve Chardonnay Washington $36 90 points
Sur lie aging and battonage were extended for 22 months on this wine. It displays aromas of corn silk, almond milk and lees that are followed by an elegant creamy mouthfeel and abundant stone-fruit flavors. The finish lingers.

Auclair 2015 Artz Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Red Mountain $20 88 points
White wines are a rarity from this red-hot appellation. This one offers aromas and flavors of pineapple and other tropical fruit that linger on the finish.

Auclair 2013 Red Wine Heart of the Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain $55 89 points
Coming from the warm 2013 vintage, this wine is chock-full of dark fruit aromas and flavors, along with generous spice notes. It brings a lot of appeal, though it occasionally seems slightly dried out.

B. Leighton 2013 Olsen Brothers Vineyard Syrah Yakima Valley $45 92 points
Starting out brooding, this wine opens with notes of mortared violets, purple fruit, herbs and plum. The dark fruit flavors are dense and full, putting a focus on the purity.

B. Leighton 2013 Gratitude  Yakima Valley $45 94 points
This wine is a blend of 70% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache and 5% Syrah. It opens with achingly pure red currant, cranberry, black pepper, blue fruit, orange peel and dried herb aromas that completely captivate the senses. The palate shows a hypnotic sense of purity along with a sense of elegance that is dazzling. Smoked meat flavors linger on the long finish. Editor's Choice

Bergevin Lane 2012 Moonspell Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $28 89 points
Café au lait, mocha, wood spice and herb aromas are followed by sweet plentiful black fruit flavors. The tannins give a dry squeeze.

Bergevin Lane 2013 Dreamweaver Malbec Wahluke Slope $28 88 points
Aromas of cocoa, vanilla, coconut and purple fruit are followed by ripe, generous fruit flavors. The oak seems a bit primary, making it drink more like a red wine than its variety.

Bergevin Lane 2015 Linen Sauvignon Blanc Columbia Valley $12 87 points
Kiwi, pineapple and herb aromas are followed by medium-bodied fruit flavors. The concentration isn’t quite all there in the middle but it still provides enjoyment. Best Buy

Big DeVine 2014 Chardonnay Columbia Valley $15 88 points
The aromas of baked apple, vanilla and baking spices are direct, with the oak in the lead. The flavors are broad in feel and continue to linger on the finish.

Big DeVine 2014 Red Blend Columbia Valley $15 88 points
This wine is a blend of Malbec (69%) and Syrah. Aromas of plum and spice lead to a plump, flavorful palate full of fruit flavors.

Block Wines 2014 Boushey Vineyard Golden Block Grenache Yakima Valley $35 92 points
This wine brings pleasingly pure notes of red fruit, bramble, black olive and earth. The flavors are full, lush and pure, backed by tart, cranberry-like acidity and a lengthy finish. It’s a compelling example of the variety, showing very pretty nuances.

Block Wines NV Farmhouse Block Marchant Vineyard Extra Brut Rosé Pinot Noir Columbia Valley $25 89 points
This pale-salmon sparkler brings aromas of citrus, strawberry and baked bread. The flavors are dry and lively, with tart acidity stretching out the finish.

Browne Family Vineyards 2013 Tribute Red Blend Columbia Valley $35 89 points
Herb, red-berry, vanilla and cherry aromas are followed by reserved black-cherry flavors. It shows a lot of restraint.

Bunnell 2011 Souzao Snipes Mountain $36 86 points
This variety is still a rarity in the state. Barrel aromas are out front, with notes of vanilla and coffee followed by herbs. The flavors are elegant, with a tart lick of acidity, but bring a stewed element that distracts.

Buty 2013 Rockgarden Estate Red Wine  Walla Walla Valley $48 91 points
This wine is a blend of Mourvèdre (75%), Syrah (15%) and Grenache. Aromas of black pepper, dried herbs, moist earth, mango, papaya and lemon twist are followed by tart, lively yet reserved fruit and savory flavors that show impeccable balance and a lengthy finish. Put it on the dinner table to see it at its best.

Buty 2013 Rediviva of the Stones Rockgarden Estate Red Blend Walla Walla Valley $60 91 points
A blend of Syrah (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon (14%) and Mourvèdre, this opens with aromas of wet gravel, herb, smoke, funk, nori and black olive that are followed by plentiful, soft, generous savory flavors that bring a lot of intensity and appeal. The finish lingers.

Buty 2014 Conner Lee Vineyard Merlot-Cabernet Franc Columbia Valley $45 89 points
Aromas of fresh, savory green herbs and red fruit lead to sumptuous black olive and red-fruit flavors. It shows a lot of elegance and grace, leaning hard into the savory.

Buty 2013 Columbia Rediviva Phinny Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah Walla Walla Valley $50 90 points
Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) takes the lead on this blend, with the balance Syrah. It brings aromas of earth, green herbs, citrus and cherry that are followed by ripe cherry flavors and a firm squeeze of slightly dry tannins.

Cadaretta 2014 SBS Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon Columbia Valley $23 89 points
The two varieties show themselves in turn, with notes of fig complemented by herb, citrus and tropical fruit. The palate has tart, juicy grapefruit-like acidity and a stretched-out finish.

Cadaretta 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $40 91 points
Locked up garden herb and cherry aromas are followed by bountiful dark fruit flavors. It possesses a lovely sense of balance and appeal, with chewy tannins backing it all up.

Cadaretta 2013 Windthrow  Columbia Valley $50 91 points
A blend of three-quarters Syrah along with 17% Mourvèdre and 8% Cinsault, this wine brings aromas of vanilla, herb, coffee and cherry. The blackberry flavors are lush and full, showing precision, with oak notes speckled throughout.

Canoe Ridge 2014 The Expedition Merlot Horse Heaven Hills $15 87 points
Tire rubber, smoke, cranberry and red-currant aromas lead to quite-sweet plum flavors. The palate provides appeal but the aromas are difficult to get around.

Canoe Ridge 2013 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills $25 88 points
This wine is a blend of fruit from Canoe Ridge, Wallula and Wahluke Slope vineyards. Aromas of dried herbs and leaves, green pepper and cherry are followed by a fruit-filled palate. The tannins come off as a bit scratchy.

Canoe Ridge 2014 The Expedition Chardonnay Horse Heaven Hills $15 87 points
Butterscotch and roasted corn-on-the-cob aromas are followed by an off-dry, viscous, creamy feeling palate. Vanilla notes persist on the finish.

Canoe Ridge 2015 The Expedition Sauvignon Blanc Columbia Valley $15 87 points
Aromas of fresh herbs, kiwi and pineapple are followed by off-dry tropical-fruit flavors that trail toward the finish.

Canoe Ridge 2013 Reserve Cherry Street Red Blend Horse Heaven Hills $25 89 points
An unusual blend of Syrah, Merlot, Grenache and Cinsault, this wine offers fruit-forward aromas of raspberry and plum that lead to plump fruit flavors, with lightly astringent tannins providing support.

Casa Smith 2014 Cervo Northridge Vineyard Barbera Wahluke Slope $20 91 points
This is the inaugural release of this wine. It shows aromas of dried herbs, plums and currants that lead to a full-bodied and full-flavored palate. It’s a mouthful of juicy fruit flavors that delights the senses, with the feel simply dazzling. Editor's Choice

Casa Smith 2014 Porcospino Northridge Vineyard Primitivo Wahluke Slope $20 91 points
This variety is a niche player in the state but this wine shows its promise. Aromas of cigar box, mineral, herb and red fruit are followed by a plush full fruit palate. It brings unabashed appeal. Editor's Choice

Casa Smith 2014 Cinghiale Wahluke Slope and Rosebud Vineyards Sangiovese Wahluke Slope $20 92 points
An inaugural release, this wine displays aromas of red and blue fruit, herbs and spice. The tart red and blue-fruit flavors show irresistible charm, like drinking a bowl of fruit. It doesn’t seem entirely varietal but it’s 100% delicious.

Casa Smith 2012 Jack’s Vineyard Barbera Walla Walla Valley $35 93 points
What’s this? Single-vineyard Barbera coming from The Rocks District? It’s a stunner, with notes of crushed rock and gravel, red and black currants and smoke that show outrageous minerality. The mouthfeel is flat out stunning, showing subtlety and suppleness, with fruit and savory flavors lingering on the finish.

Cavatappi 2015 Pinot Grigio Columbia Valley $12 88 points
The aromas bring fresh notes of pear, melon, star fruit and flowers. The palate is clean and broad in feel, lingering on the finish. Best Buy

Chester Kidder 2012 Red Blend Columbia Valley $50 91 points
This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), Syrah (23%) and Petit Verdot. Aromas of violets, black licorice, dried blackberries and dark fruit are followed by ripe, full-bodied dark fruit and baking-spice flavors. The tannins pack a hefty but still well-balanced punch.

Coach House 2012 Syrah Yakima Valley $30 86 points
The aromas seem a bit stewed, with notes of tomato leaf and pickling spices. The blue-fruit flavors are high octane, showing some heat on the finish.

Coach House 2011 Merlot Columbia Valley $25 87 points
The aromas offer notes of pickling spices, cranberry and raspberry, with green herbs lurking in the background. The palate is fruit filled and quite flavorful for the vintage, showing finesse and polish.

Coeur d'Alene 2013 Scarlet Lake Syrah Washington $28 89 points
Vanilla, coconut and baking-spice aromas are out in front of dark fruit. The cranberry and cherry flavors show vibrancy, with fruit and barrel flavors lingering on the long finish.

Coeur d'Alene 2013 Merlot Washington $30 88 points
Barrel aromas of vanilla and coconut are followed by fruit-forward cranberry and raspberry flavors and a vanilla-filled finish. The oak plays prominently.

Coeur d'Alene 2013 Mo Mourvèdre Washington $NA 88 points
Aromas of roasted coffee bean, cherry, vanilla and black pepper are followed by plentiful cherry and chocolate flavors. The tannins bring a tacky feel.

Corvus 2012 Syrah-Petite Sirah Red Mountain $35 92 points
This wine is equally split across the two varieties. The aromas offer notes of baking spice, flowers, soil and dark fruit while the palate explodes with dark, full-bodied fruit flavors. It needs time to unwind.

Corvus 2014 Cuvée  Red Mountain $25 88 points
Assorted aromas of blue, red and black fruit and dried herbs lead to ripe, full-bodied fruit flavors with a lingering finish. Chewy tannins back it, with the volatiles amped up.

Corvus 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain $45 91 points
100% varietal, this wine reveals aromas of dark coffee, pencil lead, dried herbs and dried dark fruit. The flavors are rich and focused, showing layers of depth and intensity and a long finish. It’s a hedonistic display of the variety, though at times it seems to get a bit dried out.

Corvus 2015 Rosé Red Mountain $20 86 points
Rosés are an extreme rarity from this blazing hot appellation. This blend of Cabernet Franc (80%) and Mourvèdre is pale peach in color and offers notes of herb, cereal and strawberry. The palate drinks off dry with weighty somewhat ponderous fruit flavors that seem to get bogged down but still provide enjoyment.

Dance 2014 Kaiser Vineyard at The Benches Chardonnay Horse Heaven Hills $37 89 points
The aromas offer notes of char, toast and peach. The flavors are simultaneously broad and sleek in styling, with a finish that lingers.

Ded.Reckoning 2015 Sauvignon Blanc Columbia Valley $15 88 points
This wine comes from Woodinville Wine Cellars. It displays aromas of lemongrass, custard and tropical fruit. The flavors are ripe and full bodied, lingering on the finish.

Diversion 2014 Chardonnay Columbia Valley $15 88 points
Apple, custard and baking-spice aromas are followed by elegant yet focused fruit flavors. The finish lingers.

Diversion 2014 Majestic Red Blend Columbia Valley $15 85 points
Green herb, flower, citrus and pencil lead aromas are followed by sweet plum flavors with lemony accents. Lightly grainy tannins round it out.

Diversion 2014 Merlot Columbia Valley $15 86 points
Aromas of tire rubber, plum and red currant are followed by sweet plump fruit flavors. Chalky tannins provide the frame.

Doubleback 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley $100 92 points
This wine is a blend of fruit from six different vineyards across the valley. Alluring aromas of cassis, earth, spice, vanilla and flowers are followed by a structured palate, with enough tannic heft to reward time in the cellar. Editor's Choice

Dowsett Family 2014 Celilo Vineyard Gewürztraminer Columbia Gorge $22 90 points
The aromas explode with exuberant notes of lychee, rose water, pink grapefruit and spice. The palate is medium-bodied, drinking dry with a spicy and flowery finish. The balance is impeccable. Editor's Choice

Dowsett Family 2013 Heart of the Hill Vineyard Mourvèdre Red Mountain $40 91 points
Aromas of mortared herbs, black pepper, dark fruit and lemon twist lead to full-bodied, lip-smacking cranberry and dark fruit flavors. Despite the richness it maintains a fine sense of balance.

Doyenne 2013 Grand Ciel Grand Ciel Vineyard Syrah Red Mountain $68 91 points
The aromas are brooding, with notes of orange peel, mineral, raspberry and cranberry. The palate is flavorful yet reserved with a lingering fruit-filled finish.

Dumas Station 2013 Syrah Walla Walla Valley $34 88 points
Light aromas of cocoa, dark berries and spice are followed by full-bodied dark fruit flavors that seem to show some oxygen exposure. It’s not shy but retains a sense of balance.

Dumas Station 2013 Cabernet Franc Walla Walla Valley $32 88 points
Aromas of herb, green pepper, vanilla and lemon grass are followed by light but sweet cherry flavors. Vanilla notes provide accents.

Dunham 2014 Three Legged Red Blend Columbia Valley $19 90 points
This wine brings immediate appeal, with notes of blueberry, vanilla and baking spices. The palate is sweet and supple, with plentiful blue-fruit flavors that linger. Editor's Choice

Dusted Valley 2013 Malbec Columbia Valley $42 91 points
This wine announces itself with bright aromas of plum, blueberry, dried herb and spice. The flavors are broad, with espresso and citrus flavors on the finish. It’s a prototype for the variety.

Fall Line 2013 Exhibition  Yakima Valley $22 90 points
This blend of Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (29%), Petit Verdot (18%) and Cabernet Sauvignon opens with quite pure aromas of fresh herbs, flowers, anise and red fruit that are followed by sumptuous red-fruit flavors that show vitality.

Fall Line 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Yakima Valley $30 88 points
This wine is a blend of fruit from Boushey, Artz and Red Willow vineyards. Aromas of tire rubber, herb and red and black fruit lead to a soft palate backed by fine grained tannins.

Fall Line 2013 Red Willow Vineyard Red Blend Yakima Valley $35 91 points
This wine is a blend of Merlot (37%), Cabernet Franc (31%), Cabernet Sauvignon (19%) and a whopping 13% Petit Verdot. Aromas of flowers, scorched earth, green herb and red fruit lead to concentrated, quite pure fruit and earth flavors. It brings a lovely sense of texture and the tannins add some heft.

Fall Line 2013 Artz Vineyard Red Blend Red Mountain $35 90 points
This wine is a blend of Cabernet Franc (42%), Merlot (41%) and Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of flowers, herb, pencil lead and red fruit lead to light, flavorful, reserved and lengthy fruit flavors. The tannins are tightly wound and need some time to uncoil. Best after 2022.

Feather 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley $60 92 points
This 100% varietal wine opens with aromas of minced cherries, black fruit, barrel spices, anise and high toned herbs. The flavors are pitch black showing density and depth, with a tight core of tannins providing the frame. Coffee flavors persist on the finish.

Fielding Hills 2013 Estate Riverbend Vineyard Merlot Wahluke Slope $36 92 points
